Bluetooth EMDR Tappers — Use What You Already Own.

Joy-Con controllers pair to iPhone in under two minutes and deliver wireless precision haptic bilateral stimulation — no dedicated hardware required.

Why Bluetooth Matters for EMDR Tappers

Wired EMDR tappers tether the client to a controller box. The cable has to be long enough to reach, positioned without getting in the way, and managed if the client moves during a session. Wireless Bluetooth tappers solve that constraint: the client holds two controllers, completely untethered, and moves freely.

Most premium EMDR hardware has moved toward wireless options in recent years. The tradeoff has traditionally been cost — wireless models from TheraTapper or NeuroTek run $200–$600. Joy-Cons offer an unexpected third path: Bluetooth hardware that millions of people already own.

Joy-Cons as Bluetooth Haptic Tappers

Nintendo Joy-Con controllers connect to iPhone over standard Bluetooth. The pairing process takes under two minutes — open Settings, tap Bluetooth, press the sync button on the Joy-Con, and it appears in the list. Once paired, they reconnect automatically. No special adapter, no dongle, no app-specific pairing flow.

Joy-Cons use linear resonance actuators (LRAs) for haptic feedback — the same class as iPhone's Taptic Engine. LRAs produce precise, localized taps rather than generic rumble. When TheraJoy drives them with alternating haptic patterns over Bluetooth, each controller fires independently and cleanly. Standard Bluetooth latency is approximately 10 milliseconds — far below any threshold that would affect the therapeutic experience of bilateral stimulation.

Who Already Owns Joy-Cons

Nintendo Switch has sold over 140 million units worldwide. Joy-Cons ship with every Switch and are sold separately in a range of colors. Many people have a pair in a drawer — from gaming, from a family member's console, or from a child who's grown out of it. For those clients, the barrier to trying TheraJoy is zero: download the app, connect the controllers, and start.

For clients who don't own Joy-Cons, they're available new for around $70 per pair, or used for considerably less. That's still a fraction of the cost of dedicated EMDR Bluetooth tappers.

Getting Started

  1. Download TheraJoy from the App Store (free, 7-day trial).
  2. Detach Joy-Con controllers from a Nintendo Switch, or have a standalone pair ready.
  3. On iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth. Press the sync button (small circular button on the top edge of each Joy-Con) until the lights flash. Tap the Joy-Con when it appears in the list. Repeat for the second controller.
  4. Open TheraJoy. The app detects paired Joy-Cons automatically. Set pacing and intensity, and your bilateral stimulation session begins.
