Online EMDR · Remote bilateral stimulation

EMDR Online — Full Bilateral Stimulation, Anywhere.

Run complete EMDR sessions remotely with tactile, visual, and auditory BLS. Therapist controls everything. Clients join free.

Does online EMDR actually work?

Yes. A 2021 study in Frontiers in Psychology found that teletherapy EMDR produced comparable outcomes to in-person treatment for PTSD — with similar dropout rates and symptom reduction. The therapeutic mechanism (bilateral stimulation while holding a target memory) translates to remote delivery when the BLS setup is right.

The challenge isn't the therapy. It's the bilateral stimulation. Visual BLS is straightforward over video — client watches a moving stimulus on screen. Tactile BLS, which many clients and therapists prefer, requires the client to have a device in their own hands.

How TheraJoy makes online EMDR work

TheraJoy Pro gives therapists a session code to share with clients. The client downloads the app for free, enters the code, and the therapist controls BLS settings — speed, intensity, modality — from their own device in real time. No extra platform. No per-client fee.

Tactile

Joy-Con haptic motors alternate left-right in the client's hands. Adjustable speed and intensity.

Visual

On-screen light bar moves side to side. Works without any controllers — any client device.

Auditory

Alternating tones through any headphones. Combinable with tactile for dual-channel BLS.

Setup for remote EMDR sessions

1

Therapist subscribes to Pro ($79/yr)

Unlocks remote session hosting and the ability to generate session codes.

2

Client downloads TheraJoy — free

No subscription needed to join. Client pairs their Joy-Cons to iPhone once via Bluetooth — takes about 2 minutes. See the Joy-Con setup guide.

3

Therapist shares session code

Client enters it in the app. Both are connected — therapist sees the client's status and controls BLS from their side.

4

Run the session over your usual video platform

TheraJoy runs alongside Zoom, doxy.me, SimplePractice, or any HIPAA-compliant tool. No need to switch platforms.

What therapists say about EMDR telehealth

The most common hesitation about online EMDR is the loss of tactile bilateral stimulation — historically, clients needed to be in the room with the therapist's hardware. TheraJoy eliminates that constraint. If a client owns a Nintendo Switch (or buys a pair of Joy-Cons for ~$80), they have a clinical-grade haptic BLS device that their therapist controls remotely.

For practices with geographic constraints, clients who've relocated, or clinicians expanding beyond their local area, EMDR virtual sessions with TheraJoy remove the last technical barrier.

For a detailed walkthrough of the remote setup, see the EMDR teletherapy guide or visit the EMDR tools for therapists page.
